Manager is Not a Boss

These are things I have to remind myself when in a work place. They help me remember myself and my standing  and they keep me centered my career goals and my self respect.  The stuff on this page may not be correct for you at all in any way, but for me this is what keeps me moving and not being pigeon holed into a position I do not want to hold in a job.

My personal reminders:
Your manager in your workplace is an organizer, not a leader, not a boss.
The manager is a scheduler who gets minimal bookkeeping duties to fill their time.
The manager is the boss’s tattle tale. You do things that are against company policy, the manager’s duty is to tell on you. You can not be upset with the manager for doing this. It is one of their expected tasks and duties.
The manager of the place you work at has zero authority over you and your beliefs, as long as you are doing what needs to be done.
When a manager has to tell you they are your boss, inform them “The boss is the one that signs my checks and the one you have to go to, to get permission to fire me or give me a raise, when was the last time you gave me a raise again?”.
The manager is the most dependable person who is the least fit for the rest of the jobs. Basically they show up everyday and have some knowledge of the services provided but is too big of train wreck (or slow worker too) to be of any use elsewhere. Or that person would be used to perform the services.

The assistant manager is the person doing all of the work that the manager should do. basically the managers lackey who walks around telling the manager how cool he/she is. Has zero authority.

How to be a Manager – Sad Truth

Sad to say…all of the websites and articles you see or have seen or read, and all of the “work hard and earn your keep” content that tells you that working hard pays off, is extremely untrue. From retail jobs to trade skill careers, all managers are where they are because of a friend or a family member.
By today’s standards and the loopholes of society, 98% of management are in position because they have a higher up in the company.
These people are the least eligible employees and the most useless to the company; but, they possibly show up on time may never miss days.
No one earns management. Why would they take their hardest working employee and pull them out of their current position?

If you are a manager and you think differently, then you are selectively ignoring the fact that the area manager is the one who gave you that spot and you have or had a friendship or relationship with that manager.

Things to remember when you are a manager
You are not a boss. You are an organizer and the employees depend on you to have things organized.
You are not a leader. You are the person who makes the schedule, there is nothing you are leading here. NOTHING.
If people refuse to follow your schedule, you take it to your superior.

So the truth is: You will not become a manager; you will not get a raise from earning your keep. You will get your raise and/or promotion to management position by who you know.

With that said, if you are not a manager, then you are not friendly with the person who makes people managers, and you need to be.

Foreman Confidence

You ever notice that when someone is allowed to control the way other people handle actions, they suddenly think of themselves as being a bit more invincible? Like when you watch those top model shows. You see these flaming tacky gay guys who dress as gaudy and horrible as possible with neon hair garter belts over their overalls with their socks on the outside, being rude to these beautiful models yelling at them and convincing them they know beauty better than the ladies. We all know the guys got the job because they are friends with someone. Clearly. So do the potential models. but to get to where they need to be, they treat these dudes like everything they say is the holy water that saves them.
Well a manager in a burger place can be the same thing to the people who have to work under their command. The manager at a gas station usually is that way. We all know that the person who usually gets elected to management or anywhere out of the role of the working employee, usually is the one who was worse at the job than anyone. They are a friend of someone who sees them “struggling” so the friend offers them help and sticks them in a position that a monkey can do “sit here, put on your meany face and tell them no when they ask for anything”.

Well I have noticed that while working in an office for a company that has a few managers that come and go out of the office, managers who are over specific fields in the industry, they will actually put on their “look at me, this is my meany face, don’t make me put on my tough guy face” expressions no matter what you say to them. It’s at that point I would like to trip the asshat, Tea bag with a slightly winded double dip and inform them that I do not work for them and they do not work for me and we do not work in the same field, so breaking them would quite entertaining and give me plenty to laugh about for the next few days.

Foreman Confidence – False Sense of Pride. There are other methods that work. The latter is for the small minded fool who is too ignorant to try other methods until something works.
Well to help you people make it to a better management time and  smoother class of employees in a work atmosphere that exceeds your current experience, the magic word for you is , “Morale”.  Morale can go a very long way. Eject anyone who breaks morale, and you now have respect. Simple as that. No threats. No stupid faces. Just increase morale to increase productivity. If one person steps away from or tries to deflect Morale, you eject them. If someone breaks productivity, you eject them. You replace them. High Morale means High respect and desire to keep everyone happy and leads to good productivity. Bad or low productivity is a direct reflection of low morale. FYI incintives do not create morale unless the incentives are produced by fellow employees. Incentives introduced by management turn into compensation or a form of wage, probably best not to even consider a leather jacket lotto.

I do understand that some employees will try and hard ball their way into not having to work. This in turn pretty much treats the manager like a punk. Again, it’s just a bluff. Just like the manager, it’s just a bluff. They both don’t want anything to come of them being a jerk, other than intended plans. Everything else would be beyond their expectations. I have no idea why anyone does either. Does it make this little three minute window, a tad bit better? Do you know that might be upsetting someone else? Do you live you life thinking no one ever flies off the handle that the jails are only full of bad people and never provoked people? “Doubt” is the fools science. but then again. by the odds, it’s one in every 3000, at best that snap and just break the office jerk. Or at least try.

Just something I noticed about people in charge in the office, in the field and in retail. There is this false sense of pride thing that says if you act like a jerk, people under your watch will respect you.

How do you handle this person at work? what do you do to make this person in your work place stop making your job suck so bad? Without trying to act tougher than you are, or without acting tough to someone who does not even want to try and be that way towards you? Would it be wise to let them know how you feel about their actions? They probably wouldn’t believe you.

Working in a Gas Station is Bad

As someone who worked in a few gas stations for a while. I have tons of gas station stories about funny events but this post is actually about why I did not like working in a gas station.

(Quick note) If you want to know how old you must be to work in a gas station, If the gas station sales beer or alcohol then you must be of legal age to sell them. You need to check with your local state officials. Do not try and get by with what you see on some random website like this one.

400 people in a day. Can you please 400 people a day with proper happy polite service? Every single day 6 days a week, all year around?

How many times can you deal with someone cutting in front of the line you have to just throw money at you, while you are trying to help the nice old lady at the counter who seems to be counting pennies?

How many times in a week can you hear “you have a bad attitude” when you haven’t done anything, and aren’t feeling any bad emotion?

How often can you rush to get all of the customers out of your store because you need to use the restroom only to get slammed with 6 people who can’t decide what scratch off lotto ticket they are wanting to buy?

People for some reason, like to sigh really heavy when they get to counter. As if to say “hey dude, I have had a rough day”, but what you will notice, is they all blow right in your face when they do that.
People will cough right in your face, full open mouth, non-covered cough in your face. If the store you work at is near a hospital, that can be pretty dang scary. Unless of course, you don’t notice that kind of stuff. Then maybe a gas station is perfect for you.

You have to restock that cooler at the end of your shift, and clean the bathrooms and empty the trash all around the store and parking lot. Beer soaked diapers. Many other bathroom things in the bathroom trash. and no. Not everyone can aim at the toilet. Standing or sitting. 1 or 2. Keep this in mind when you are being trained for the light stuff like working the cash register.

What about the times when you just can’t get everything together, like the register is on the boink, and you seem to be out of all of the rare cigarettes and that day is the day that everyone wants that rare brand of cigarettes meanwhile the lotto machine won’t work all the while your line is getting longer and your customers are all grumbling like they don’t see that your day sucks, they are just huffy about their 30 seconds being wasted because you aren’t good at what you doing? Even the nicest customers do this grumble.

Get hit back to back with kids trying to buy stuff that their I.D. won’t let them and they raise a fuss. and you have to remain calm. It’s just a kid, and it happens every day, multiple times. Meanwhile the state officials want to pull stings on YOU, not them. You know it would set a good example if a few kids could prove that cops don’t like kids buying beer.

Then to get a phone call from your store manager telling you that your store will be inspected tomorrow so you need to really bust your hump and scrub everything that they think your minimum wage is worth. So she can collect her 6 month bonus of $7000. $7000 that you will not see a penny of. Both of her 6 month bonuses are more than your yearly income. Meanwhile her salary is twice your yearly income.
She/he talks to you like you are a moron and like the world will fall apart because you can’t show up the next day. She tells you that she never goes to her kid’s events though she is off by 2 pm every single day, and yes she thinks she is a baby sitter of adult idiots. All the while she has no intelligent answer about anything. Remember this and test it for yourself, “Stupid people act angry so you won’t stump them with a simple question”. Now ask her about current events or what the difference is between kinetic energy and g-forces. Trust me she will not know and she will give you a rude answer. Play it off as you got asked this by your sister’s kid and got to wondering.

You need to get out of retail. A person working at the sewage plant  makes more than three times your wage. Three times your wage! And he has the weekend off. and he gets raises greater than 25 cents a year. Ever notice the lawn care crews have lots of money? They mow lawns. Not too complicated. You can do that. Grab a mower and do it for yourself. It’s easy. Janitors make more than you, You know whats even worse? They all get the weekend and holidays off, and you do not. More Truth about Working in a gas station. You will not have any full holiday off. When you are on vacation, expect someone to be sick and your vacation to be cut short and you will not get a thank you from the other person or the manager.

Please, for the sense of anything logical Get a better job, Do a job search, get the heck out of retail. Those people do not respect you. No matter how nice the Christmas card is you get every year (lol, you likely won’t see one). They do not respect you, they don’t want to know who or what you are, just have a heart beat , don’t steal, put money in the register and don’t be late.

I Work With People

Offices can be a whole new adventure, especially if you have had  jobs doing other stuff your whole life, that did not involve  working directly along side people in the same building.

I have to remind myself today that I work with “People” Not robots, not humans, not a person, not a woman, not a man, not women, not men, but I work with people.

Seems the dude I share an office with likes to hear himself talk while you are telling him something he needs to know. I have to remember he is just a person who might have a chemical issue in his head or something. Or he gets a thrill out of interrupting. He seems to do it most when you are telling him something very important.

When we hire new females, they seem to hit on every guy and ask them what their position is in the company and finally land/settle on some guy who is as high up as she thinks she can hit. This amazes me. It seems the higher you go, the crappier the personality. I wish I could come up with a way of calling them out on this, without getting fired for upsetting the bosses new bang. It’s the twenty somethings. The twenty somethings have no respect for their job or career. They are the dirty birds that will come and go. They do not understand why you will not play along or hide behind the filing cabinets for a quick what ever. After you reject the advances from a few, you start to notice that the other guys in the building have no problem going for it. Kind of leaves you feeling like you missed out. but hey, you still have your job. Is this good? is this bad? Do you have higher morals? do you have greater priorities? Are you scared to live on the edge? What can you call this to make it understandable that anything away from work is kinds fine, but during work is just insane and to big of a risk? Some of us have bills. Alimony, child support, mortgages, and any other looming impending crap that makes life suck. You have made mistakes before in your life, making one more would only prove that you don’t care about your own future.

Salesmen with their constantly saying ” Hey you’re alright, I don’t care what everyone says about you” . That’s just lame. put your finger gun away and get back to making sales. The company needs money and I need more work you cheeseball. Imagine a puff of chest hair and flipped up collar on a silk shirt.. gold necklace and shiney loafers. yeah… slick.

I have no name for this but here is the best I can do for it. The guy that is a manager of a department or a division and is trying to intimidate you into doing stuff for him just because he has groveling weaklings that work below him somewhere. This dude needs to get bent. You have to many bosses and not enough middle fingers to support hatred towards him in any other way than a quick kick down the stairs. You know he is a person. but man…..

That one guy who refuses to hold an elevator.

That one guy that runs through a door every time you hold it open for a woman.

The Boss (video)

Just one of those videos I made to represent the way I feel

Does it not seem like the laziest, most worthless person with the slowest  learning (of the job) skills but most open personality seems to always get the boss position and put into management above you? Their attitude always sucks once that happens. Well here’s a foreman video.

I call this video, The Boss

Forward this to that fat lazy thieving piece of trash you are certain will be your boss soon. and basically, wish him/her luck.
